Maria is a teacher from Canada who has been heading Nursery class at OC for the last two years. She has always been very creative and this year she’s delighted to widen our children’s experience by opening up their potential in Clay modeling.

The most easily recognized form of sculpting is clay modeling. Clay is very versatile and there are so many ways toddlers and preschoolers can play and experiment with it. Clay gives them the opportunity to be creative and learn about texture, shape and form whilst having lots of fun.

Manipulating clay helps toddlers and preschoolers to develop their hand and eye co-ordination as they pound, pat and push the clay into shapes and objects. Clay also helps children work the small muscles in their fingers and hands, known as fine motor skills, as they pinch, squeeze and prod the clay, adding detail to the shape or object. Children also further their imagination, perseverance, problem-solving expertise, teamwork, positive social interaction and self-regulation.
