“Where do peas come from?” one teacher asked. “From the grocery store,” an eager pupil responds.

At OC, we spend the week before Harvest Day learning about garden and orchard crops, how fruits and vegetables grow, where they grow, how they are harvested, in what ways they are conserved for the winter, and what value they have in our diet. Then, on Harvest Day, children bring in to school one fruit or vegetable and we feel them, smell them, categorize them, and then wash them and cut them up for eating.

This year, we dressed up as farmers, and even made butter ourselves – for spreading on crackers to eat with our ‘harvest’!

It was a yummy day!
